With the arrival of the emerald ash borer and its potential threat to ash trees, the goal of any urban forest is to achieve tree genera diversity; no one genus should compose more than 20% of the total urban forest population. Tree diversity should be planned into both public and private landscapes.
When Dutch elm disease devastated the urban forests years ago, ash was often the replacement tree because of its rapid canopy growth. Unfortunately tree diversity was not practiced during Dutch elm disease urban forest replanting.
UW-Extension specialist, Dr. Laura Jull has developed a detailed list of landscape trees for consideration in the planting of the urban forest.

University research results suggest that some treatment products and methods are effective when made appropriately, although there is some uncertainty of the long term effectiveness.

If you have an EAB infested tree that you would like to use as firewood, please note:- EAB larvae in a downed tree can survive and emerge from the firewood pile for up to two years.
- Wait until late autumn to take down an infested tree.
- Be sure you will use up all of the wood from that tree by spring.
- If you cannot use all of the wood in one winter season, you are better off leaving the infested tree standing through summer. Then follow guidelines for wood utilization when finally taking the tree down.
